You can’t look up and look down at the same time.

To us who appear to be here in time, this is a physical fact.  You have to look where you are going or more precisely, where you intend to go.  For Focus is Life. Simple right?  Yet we find it easier to look down.  To look at what is wrong, to criticize, to maintain levels of so called inequality, to overlook our common brotherhood, to feel we have to look at sin and temptation.  Where is “Up” you might ask?  Oh, the sun is so bright.  Oh, I can not bear to look up, for who am I to raise my head in optimism, to dare to behold the glory and splendor above me?  To regard even a glimmer of hope, peace and happiness which we instinctively know to be our right.

But looking up has benefits.  Have you ever seen a flower bloom in glorious colors by looking down?  Does even the solar cell gain energy and generate power by looking down?  These are easy physical facts even a child can intuit.  But what escapes most is:

You can’t look up and look down at the same time.

This is a core spiritual truth.  But you say, “I have to look down at some point in order to see the problems and stones I must surmount”.  Really?  Is it not also a simple observation that if you were not looking down in the first place, these “problems” would not be visible at all?

Life flourishes in the Light, for Light is Love.  Love only regards itself and recognizes the same.  While problems are seemingly many, the Light is One.  Which would you rather behold? Look up.

Today we pass illusions by.  And if we hear temptation call to us to stay and linger in a dream, we turn aside and ask ourselves if we, the Sons of God, could be content with dreams, when Heaven can be chosen just as easily as hell, and love will happily replace all fear – Lesson 272, A Course in Miracles
